Chapter Twenty-Three
The next morning, Fab and Didier showed up early, coming in the front door without knocking. She had a pink bakery box in one hand and Iâd bet a lockpick in one of her pockets. Creole had made two pots of coffee.
âHow is it that Iâm the last to know about this impromptu meeting?â I asked.
Fab slid onto a stool across from me at the island. âHave a cinnamon rollâthey were fresh out of the oven. Youâll be much perkier.â
I barely stopped myself from licking my lips.
Didier placed breakfast pastries on a platter and set them in the middle of the island, then passed out plates while Creole poured coffee.
It didnât take long for the food to disappear and the coffee mugs to be refilled.
âDid you tell Creole about Didier and me seeing Krista at the bar?â Fab asked.
âKnowing my hubâs not going to like my idea of how to deal with that woman, I thought Iâd wait and shuffle the telling onto you. If I manage to stay out of jail, why mention old news?â I could feel Creoleâs glare without looking his way.
Didier shook his head at me.
âWhoâs Krista?â Creole asked.
âXanderâs⦠you might not know this part.â I motioned to Fab. âKnowing you love a good story, be sure to start at the beginning.â
âXanderâs girlfriend. Sheâs pregnant⦠sort of,â Fab said.
âYou donât look very surprised by this announcement,â Creole said to Didier.
âSworn to secrecy.â Didier smirked and nudged Fab. âBe sure to throw in a timeline.â
Fab relayed the events of the night she and Didier had seen Krista in the bar. Nothing varied from what sheâd told me.
âI take it that Xander doesnât know what you found out?â Creole asked.
âThe reason for this morningâs meeting,â Fab said. âTold Didier your idea, and he thinks it needs to be revised. But only in parts.â
âWhat were you thinking of doing?â Creole asked. âIâm sure you both know that this is one of those situations where thereâs no good way to break the news.â
âKidnap Krista at gunpoint, drag her ass down here, and make her tell on herself,â I said.
Creole laughed. âThat was Fabâs idea, and sheâs letting you take credit.â
I glared at him. âI can come up with thug ideas of my own.â
âThe part I donât like is that you could go to jail,â Didier said.
Creole put his hand over mine. âThereâs not going to be a good way to tell Xander that he was conned. I do like your idea of making Krista do it herself, minus the illegal parts.â
âUnless sheâs forced, sheâs not going to fess up to anything,â I insisted.
âIâve come up with an amendment to the plan.â Fab waved wildly.
âNo more coffee for you,â I said.
She ignored me, which Iâd expected. âWe invite her down here for a birthday lunch for Xander. I know itâs not his birthday, but maybe she doesnât know that.â
âBetter yet, invite her to celebrate Xander getting a big bonus,â Didier said.
âIf sheâs as greedy as itâs been suggested, sheâll show,â Creole said.
